Digital Euro ECB Roadmap: When It Arrives and What to Do Now
The Digital Euro project has a clear roadmap: 2026, 2027, 2029. Three key dates every European merchant should know.

The Digital Euro project has a clear roadmap: 2026, 2027, 2029 — three key dates every European merchant should know.
The Three Dates That Matter
On 29 October 2025, the ECB's Governing Council approved moving to the next phase of the project. The timeline is now defined:
- 2026 — EU Legislation: The EU Parliament adopts the law authorizing the issuance of the Digital Euro. Without this law, no launch is possible.
- Mid-2027 — Pilot Program: Possible start of a controlled test with selected participants. First real integrations with banks and intermediaries.
- 2029 — First Public Issuance: The Digital Euro becomes available to all citizens of the euro area.
The 5 Technical Providers Selected by the ECB
The ECB has already signed framework agreements with 5 external technical providers for key system components:
- Alias lookup
- Risk and fraud management
- App and SDK for developers
- Offline payment solutions
- Secure payment information exchange
Six national central banks were chosen for core settlement and issuance functions. The infrastructure is distributed across three European locations with automatic failover — no single point of failure.
