What is the Digital Euro: Europe's Future Money Explained
Discover what the Digital Euro is: the ECB project for a secure, private digital currency accessible to all Europeans.

The Digital Euro is Europe's answer to the digitalization of payments: an electronic currency issued directly by the European Central Bank, as secure as physical cash, but usable everywhere in Europe.
Why Does Europe Need a Digital Currency?
Today, when you pay online with a card, your transaction goes through private international networks — often American. A full 13 of the 20 eurozone countries rely on these networks for digital payments. The Digital Euro changes the rules: a European digital currency, issued by the ECB, independent from foreign intermediaries.
It is not a cryptocurrency. Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, the Digital Euro has a value guaranteed by the European Central Bank — the same institution that prints the banknotes you use every day.
How Will It Work in Practice?
Imagine an app on your phone — or a physical card — that you can use to pay at any store or website in the euro area. Same experience in Italy, France, Spain and all the other 17 eurozone countries. No exchange fees, no foreign networks.
The ECB has already tested scenarios with a holding limit of €3,000 per person — enough for everyday purchases, not enough to destabilize the banking system.
Your Identity Stays Protected
One of the biggest concerns is financial surveillance. The ECB has responded with a clear architecture: the European System of Central Banks will not be able to identify you or your purchases. They will only see pseudonymous identifiers. Identity management (KYC/AML) stays with banks and intermediaries — just as it works with your bank account today.
When Is It Coming?
The ECB's Governing Council decided on 29 October 2025 to advance to the next phase of the project. The roadmap foresees:
- 2026: EU legislative framework adoption
- Mid-2027: possible pilot program launch
- 2029: first public issuance
