Digital Euro and eCommerce: What Changes for Online Sellers

The Digital Euro will change online payments in Europe. For eCommerce operators, now is the time to understand what changes and how to prepare.

A New European Payment Method

Today, accepting digital payments means relying on Visa, Mastercard, PayPal or other international operators. Every transaction has fees, every cross-border payment has conversion costs. The Digital Euro introduces a native European alternative: zero currency conversions, a single infrastructure for the entire eurozone.

For a merchant selling across Europe, this means less friction at checkout and potentially lower transaction fees.

The Statistic That Changes Everything: 13 Out of 20 Countries

The ECB identified a concerning fact: 13 of the 20 euro area countries rely on international card networks for digital payments. This creates technological and geopolitical dependencies that the Digital Euro is designed to eliminate. For merchants, it means access to a more integrated, less fragmented European market.

Simpler Checkout, Higher Conversions

66% of European citizens surveyed by the ECB said they were interested in trying the Digital Euro. A native European payment method, recognizable and trusted, already in the wallets of millions of consumers, could reduce cart abandonment — especially for merchants selling cross-border.

Offline Payments: New Scenarios for Physical and Hybrid Stores

The Digital Euro will also work offline, device to device. For merchants with physical stores or hybrid online/offline models, this opens new scenarios: payments in places without connectivity, outdoor markets, events, international trade fairs.
